Got a favorite opening line from a Dead song? Here are a couple that come to mind for me:

Well, the first days are the hardest days, don't you worry anymore

Let my inspiration flow in token rhyme suggesting rhythm that will not forsake me 'til my tale is told and done
(That one is quite the mouthful, isn't it?)

And speaking of inspiration, mine for this thread came from reading part of one of those stupid Top 50 Whatever lists that I found on AOL during my pre-dawn 'net prep for work. It was, for the most part, just the sort of insipid pop culture bullshit one might expect of an AOL Top 50 Best Song Opening Lines countdown, and I only looked at the top 20 or so. It has since been taken down, so I am unable to include a link to it. Yeah, I know. Total bummer. But it was not without some good ones:

"There must be some kind of way out of here," said the joker to the thief

I was born in a crossfire hurricane

(And a personal favorite)
We don't smoke no marijuana in Muskogee

The top five also included Why do birds suddenly appear every time you are near?, and the phrase "what the fuck is up with that?" somehow popped into my mind in response, but there's no accounting for taste. It's anyone's guess at this point what else was on the list, but how about some other Best Opening Lines?

I pulled into Nazareth, I was feelin bout half-past dead

You who are on the road must have a code that you can live by

I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together

Jeremiah was a bullfrog (sheer poetry)

ok - a few non-Dead openers:

When the dream came
I held my breath with my eyes closed
I went insane, like a smoke ring day
When the wind blows

Lime and limpid green, a second scene
A fight between the blue you once knew.

Wednesday morning at five o'clock as the day begins
Silently closing her bedroom door
Leaving the note that she hoped would say more

Standing on the corner
Suitcase in my hand
Jack is in his corset and Jane is in her vest
Me, honey, I’m in a rock n roll band

I stopped at a roadhouse in Texas,
A little place called Hamburger Dan's

‘The way I see it, ‘ he said
You just can’t win it.

There’s a great big mystery
And it sure is worrying me

Just reading Neil's words to On The Way Home almost levitated me out of my chair, and I can hear Richie Furay's voice singing in my mind. Been a long time since I heard that one and it brings back a few very specific, very fond memories. Thank you so much, rob!

And I have always thought it was a really gutsy move on her part to say she was "a free man in Paris," haven't you? Great song!

Afterthought: Or was the whole thing a quote from what "he said"?

I could arm a town the size of Abilene.

A pistol shot, at five o'clock, the bells of Heaven ring.

or any of the Other One opening lines:

Spanish lady come to me, she lays on me this rose,
It rainbow spirals round and round, it trembles and explodes

When I woke up this morning, my head was not intact,
I asked my friends about it, try to find out where it's at

I woke up this morning my head was not in sight,
I would ask the walls about it, but they vanished overnight

Virgil Caine is the name and I served on the Danville train
'Til Stoneman's cavalry came and tore up the tracks again

Thirty-two teeth in a jawbone
Alabama's tryin' for none

Here come old flat top he come grooving up slowly
He got joo-joo eyeball, he one holy roller

Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play
Dear Prudence, greet the brand new day

Georgia, Georgia, the whole day through
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind

An old cowpoke went out on a dark and windy day
Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way

There was a wealthy merchant, in London he did dwell
He had a beautiful daughter, the truth to you I'll tell

Come take this badge off of me
I won't wear it any more

I am a man of constant sorrow
I have seen trouble all my days

Nineteen forty, Xmas eve, with the full moon over town
Stagger Lee shot Billy DeLyon and he blew that poor boy down

I saw a werewolf with a chinese menu in his hand
Walking through the streets of Soho in the rain

Please don't dominate the rap, Jack
If you got nothing new to say

Looking for a chateau
Twenty one rooms but one will do

That's it for now

Since it costs a lot to win, and even more to lose
I went down to the mountain, I was drinkin some wine...
A pistol shot at five o'clock...
Your rain falls like Crazy Fingers...
Great North Special, were you on board?
My time comin' any day, dont worry 'bout me no...
Hey Now...
If I had theworld to give...

Picture a bright blue ball, just spinning, spinning free...
When the last rose of summer pricks my finger...
There were days, and there were days between...

All I know is something like a bird
within her sang

Fare you well my honey
Fare you well my only true one

Comes a time
when the blind man takes your hand
says: don't you see?

No, no, she can't take your mind and leave

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way

Know your place in life is where you want to be
Don't let them tell you that you owe it all to me

Why try? I know why
The feeling inside me says it's time I was gone

Begin the day with a friendly voice,
A companion unobtrusive

Here are a few Dead openers I like. First lines from other performers may take a bit longer to think of.

In the attics of my life
Full of cloudy dreams unreal

Paradise waits
on the crest of a wave
her angels in flame

Cold iron shackles and a ball and chain
Listen to the whistle of the evening train

Look for awhile at the China Cat Sunflower
proud-walking jingle in the midnight sun

I have seen where the wolf has slept by the silver stream.
I can tell by the mark he left you were in his dream.
